Cambuslang – Miners Monument

Background

Situated next to a bus stop layby on Main Street is a memorial consisting of a minehead wheel and two “bogies,” dedicated to the miners who worked in local pits, as well as those who tragically died in the many mining accidents that occurred throughout the years.

It also pays tribute to Mick McGahey, who was the Scottish president and vice president of the National Union of Mineworkers and campaigned to improve conditions for miners.

During the mining industry’s earliest years, children as young as six years old were sent down to earn money for their families, often in unsafe conditions.

The monument was previously erected in the Cambuslang Industrial Estate. It was moved to its present site in 2005.
