Cumbernauld – Arria Statue

Background

Standing beside the M80 motorway on the eastern side of Cumbernauld is the magnificent 10-metre-tall Arria sculpture, a female figure with outstretched arms and two other arcs, whilst wearing a flowing dress. It was named after Arria Fadilla. the mother of Roman Emperor Antonius Pius, who was responsible for the construction of the nearby Antonine Wall. The name was chosen by a local schoolgirls Bethany and Louise Reid, in a public competition.

The design is based on the Gaelic name for Cumbernauld, ‘Comar nan Allt’, which means the meeting of waters. Each of the statue’s arms and arcs represent the streams.

The creator was Andy Scott, who is best known for designing The Kelpies near Falkirk. Just like them, this structure is also made of welded metal pieces that have been joined together. At the base of the statue are inscriptions written by poet Jim Carruth.
