Cumbernauld – Roman Soldier In Dullatur

Background

Situated next to a roundabout on the approach to the village of Dullatur, from the northern side of Cumbernauld, stands a large and colourful statue of a Roman Legionary.

Dullatur is close to the route of the Antonine Wall. Similar to Hadrian’s Wall in the North of England, this was a line of Roman fortifications for which there was a fort near the village.

The Antonine Wall was the most Northern border of the Roman Empire because the Romans are said to have considered the area beyond it as “barbarian territory.” As a consequence they failed to occupy all of Scotland.

The statue was made by John Colquhoun, who was a local retired farmer. He donated it to the town of Cumbernauld on the 50th anniversary of the new town in 2007.
