Cumbernauld – The Shopper

Background

Situated in a small car park off Central Way and outside the main entrance of Cumbernauld Shopping Centre stands a 2.5 metre high bronze figure of a young woman wearing a scarf, carrying shopping, accompanied by an abstract structure behind her, both of which are mounted on a plinth.

This was one of a few sculptures that were originally inside the shopping mall.

Commissioned by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation in 1980, the sculpture became a “monument to the shopper,” described as a constant human activity requiring dedication and purpose and not often praised or noticed.

The creator was Bill Scott.
