Douglas – Earl of Angus Statue

Background

Situated on the corner of Blue Tower and Crabtree Street, overlooking the football ground of Crabtree Park is the bronze statue of James, the Earl of Angus, standing on a circular plinth with his arm outstretched and pointing towards Douglas Moor, where he raised an army that became the Cameronian Regiment on the 14th May 1689.

The army was formed with over a thousand Scottish Covenanters, intent on fighting for William of Orange against James VII and the Jacobites. The Cameronians Regiment existed for over 200 years in the British Army until it was disbanded in the 1960s. Their badge is on east face of plinth.

This monument was erected by the Douglas family in 1888 to mark the 200-year anniversary of the raising of the regiment, as well as being a tribute to the Earl of Angus, the son of James Douglas and the 2nd Marquess of Douglas.

The sculptor was Thomas Brock.
