East Kilbride – Great Oaks

Background

Situated next to the grounds of East Kilbride Football Club at Calderglen Park is an unusual tubular steel construction consisting of a weathervane, a cross-shaped section that consists of the letters E, K, C and T, with a circular sign on top. A wire mesh signifies Saint Bridget’s cross, as a reference to East Kilbride. It also has legs in the shape of the letter J at the bottom and a P on the pole.

This was a structure to symbolise the work of the East Kilbride Community Trust, hence the letters E, K, C, T. The structure also pays tribute to two brothers, James and Paul Kean who have been trustees of the Trust and are also symbolised with the letters J and P.

The artist was inspired by the charity’s work in the community and in conjunction with the growth of East Kilbride Football Club (EKFC), to ‘from a small acorn grows a great oak’.
