Forth – Miners Monument

Background

This monument, situated on grassland between the A706 trunk and the junction of Ravenswood and Longdales, commemorates the village’s association with coal mining.

During the 1900’s, many of Forth’s residents moved from the nearby Wilsontown and into newly constructed council housing. They also found employment in the nearby pits at Kingshill near Shotts, as well as smaller mines nearer to the village, including Backshot at the bottom of the street named Cloglands.

This is one of many miners’ monuments in this area. Other statues can be seen in Shotts, Harthill and Allanton.

The statue was erected in 2023 and was created by John McKenna.
