Lanark – Wallace Murals

Background

Situated at the top of the town’s Castlegate and in a small space between two buildings are large murals depicting William Wallace.

Castlegate, as its name suggests, leads to the site of what was Lanark Castle, on a mound at the bottom of the street which is now occupied by Lanark Bowling Club. Where the murals have been painted is on the site of what is said to be the former town house of the Laird of Lamington, the father of Marion Braidfute, wife of William Wallace.

As you look in from Castlegate, the mural on the right-hand wall depicts William Wallace’s assault on Lanark Castle, where he killed the English sheriff Haselrigg, before burning the castle to the ground. The left-hand mural shows Wallace’s retreat to the Clyde where he and his men rested as new followers gathered to assist him in his campaign to fight against Edward VIII.

The space has also been provided with seating, a poem by local bard Les Hunter and a cartoon strip by Kate Sheppard.  The “Wallace Sword,” which sits in the middle of the site, was the work of Josef and Denisa Gara.  Information panels on the left-hand wall provide more information about William Wallace and this moment of Lanark’s history.

The murals were created by Glasgow graffiti artist Rogue One and were unveiled in 2023.
