Lanarkshire Songwriters is group of local musicians who get together twice-monthly in Stonehouse and other venues throughout Lanarkshire, to perform and share songs and stories in an informal evening of music and discussion.

As well as having its own strong membership, the group encourages other musicians to come along and participate in their many musical projects, whilst sharing advice and experiences of songwriting and performing in a variety of styles that ranges from blues and country to traditional folk and Scots music.

The group was established in 1997 and regularly met at The Cave in Lanark, before moving to the former Cartland Bridge Hotel on the outskirts of the town. The group later met at The Crosskeys in Stonehouse before moving again to the Crossford Inn in Crossford.

The group have recorded several CD’s and albums, based on Lanarkshire’s historical past, culture and traditions. These include “14 Gallant Men,” featuring songs based on the stories and paintings of local artist Duncan Brown, which were about fourteen Victoria Cross Winners who either came from or lived in Lanarkshire. The album “Gentle Giants” was created in partnership with Greentrax Recording and includes songs about Lanarkshire’s own breed of horse, the Clydesdale. “Grassmarket Butchers” is an album about the Covenanters, whilst the album “Blantyre to Barcelona” was inspired by three men who left Blantyre to fight in the Spanish Civil War.  The album “Silent Chorus” is a collection of mining songs that give an insight into Lanarkshire’s mining industry and was part of South Lanarkshire Council’s project “Pits, Ponies, People and Stories.” Meanwhile, in recognition of Lanarkshire’s fruit growing, jam making and orchard industries, the songwriters recorded the album “Fruits Of Their Labours,” which was in partnership with the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership (CAVLP). The project also involved several local primary schools.

As well as participating in performances across Lanarkshire and beyond, members have also been involved in working with the communities and schools, providing songwriting and musical workshops that were supported by the Scottish Arts Council, Local Authorities and the New Makars Trust.

The group meet up the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month between September and May from 8pm in the Auld Stanehouse Cafe in Stonehouse. In the summertime they perform in other venues in Lanarkshire, which have included the Hopetoun Arms in Leadhills and the bandstand in Stonehouse’s own public park.
