Larkhall Hall – Working Hands

Background

This seven-foot-high sculpture (erected on the Merryton roundabout to mark the regeneration of Larkhall) was created by artist Alan Potter, as well as Rachel Boyd and other pupils from Larkhall Academy. Manufacture and construction of the sculpture was by Barnsahws.

The concept was to celebrate Larkhall’s weaving industry, which was a major source of employment during the 17th and 18th centuries until the mining industry boom of the late 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is made of bent stainless steel tubing and formed in the shape of hands. An ascending lark is placed on the top of the sculpture, in keeping with the town’s name. The other students involved in the design were Victoria McIntosh, Samantha Simpson, Kirsten Lamb, Megan Burnside, Emily Bell, Ruth Langley, Deanna Danks, Calum Hamilton, Aaron Irving, Sam Butler and Sophie Johnston.
