Shire Extra for lanarkshire Shire Extra Across Lanarkshire
The Glasgow Mela was founded in 1990 as part of Glasgow’s celebrations as European City of Culture and has grown to become the largest multi-cultural celebration in Scotland. It is one of many Mela events that take place across the country every year.
The free event is held annually in Kelvingrove Park (in the city’s West End) on a Sunday in June, bringing dance, crafts, food, worskshops and more. Although the focus is on South-Asian culture, it is also a celebration of music and arts from around the globe. The event is attended by typically 40,000 people each year.
Mela is a sanskrit word meaning ‘to meet’ or ‘gathering’ and is used to describe festivals in the Indian subcontinent. The concept of Mela has developed to represent a coming together of people from varied cultures to celebrate their diversity. Each year the Glasgow Mela brings international artists and performers, alongside local groups from Scotland’s diverse communities. It showcases a contemporary multi-cultural Scotland.
Shire Extra also likes to celebrate Lanarkshire’s cultural diversity and provides an hour each weekday evening that is devoted to people of some ethnicities who have chosen Lanarkshire as their home. We also have a weekly World Music show on Tuesday evenings.
