Motherwell – Aztec Concrete Panels

Background

Above shops on Motherwell’s Brandon Parade are a row of aztec concrete panels measuring 9ft high and 300 ft long. Their elevated position causes most shoppers to overlook this artwork that was erected in 1970.

The design was by Scottish mural designer, painter and sculptor Charles Anderson and the panels were manufactured by Hugh Martin & Partners.

The panels were made in precast concrete using polystyrene moulds. Each panel has “holes” at the request of the structural engineers to reduce its weight.
