Motherwell – The Red Motherwell Tree

Background

Situated on the pedestrian precinct area of Merry Street is a red tree made from Motherwell steel.

Formerly an exhibit of the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988, this was one of five artworks created by George Wyllie for the Festival. Since then the tree was given a home in other places. It was moved to this location in Motherwell as part of the town’s renovations and refurbishment in 2010.

The red colour is said to be a political gesture, given the West of Scotland’s traditional support for the Labour Party, whilst the stainless-steel birds on the branch are supposedly having a “union meeting,” according to its designer. The tree has stumps around it that provide seating.
