Motherwell – The Steel Man

Background

Situated on O’Donnell Way which leads into the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, is a structure that depicts a steel worker wearing a protective mask, with a stream of molten steel pouring from his hand and sparking off the ground.

The 16ft sculpture is on the site of the former Ravenscraig Steelworks, a major employer for the residents of Motherwell, Wishaw and surrounding communities. The works closed in 1995 and brought an end to 120 years of bulk steelmaking in Scotland.

This symbol of Scotland’s industrial heartland, designed by Andy Scott, is a tribute to the thousands of people who lost their lives in the Scottish iron and steelmaking industry.
