Situated at the “Newmains Roundabout” is a statue of local boxer James Murray, who tragically lost his life at the age of 25 after he competed in a boxing match.
Born in Lanark, James was a Scottish professional bantamweight boxer. He won the British Boxing Board of Control Scottish Area bantamweight title in November 1994. He gained a reputation for his boxing skills, as he made a name for himself in the Scottish boxing world before turning professional in March 1993.
On October 13, 1995, he was fighting for the bantamweight title against Drew Docherty, in the Grand Ballroom of the Hospitality Inn in Glasgow. The match drew a crowd of around 700 people. During the 12th round, Murray collapsed in the ring and became unresponsive. He had a seizure before a doctor came to his assistance. He was rushed to hospital by paramedics but after an attempted life-saving neurosurgical procedure, his life support system was shut down. He died as a result of a brain injury sustained during the fight.
The statue, created by Allison Bell, depicts him with his boxing gloves raised and wearing his champions belt.
