Plains – Stanrigg Memorial Benches

Background

Situated in Stanrigg Memorial Park off Arbuckle Road are two black-painted steel benches with cut-out scenes of miners at work, showing different scenes in the history or mining.

The benches, created by Marton Fabrication, were put in place after the 101st anniversary of the Stranrigg mining disaster, which claimed the lives of 19 people on the 9th July 1918, when the mine was overwhelmed with an inrush of peat.
