Rigside – Miners Memorial

Background

Situated at the junction of Ayr Road and Beechgrove Street is Rigside’s own memorial to recognise its association with the coal mining industry.

Whilst other nearby mining villages have installed statues of miners, this one features a bogie that is filled with coal, complimented with benches that have images of miners performing certain tasks as part of their job.

Erected by the Douglas Water and Rigside’s Residents Association in 2016, the memorial is dedicated to the miners at Douglas Colliery, including nine miners who lost their lives and whose names are respectfully etched on plaques fixed to the bogie.
