Shire Extra for lanarkshire Shire Extra Across Lanarkshire

Rutherglen – James Gorman

Background

Situated at the junction of Main Street and Queen Street, next to Rutherglen Old Parish Church, is a monument to Rutherglen physician Dr James Gorman, whose statue depicts him finely dressed and seated on a classical chair, adorning a stern and serious expression, with a pile of books at this side.

Born in Rutherglen in 1832, Gorman provided Ruglonians with care long before the National Health Service was created. He is also mentioned in several historical accounts as having treated the injured during some of Lanarkshire’s most serious and worst mining disasters. When he qualified in medicine, he joined his father’s practice in the town and soon established a reputation for clinical excellence. In addition to treating private patients, he became a parish doctor and provided free treatment for patients on the Poor Roll.

Such was the town’s high regard for him that after his death in 1899 the citizens collected funds for a memorial.

The statue was erected in 1901 and was created by sculptor Johan Keller, Professor at the Glasgow School of Art.

The statue is classified by Historic Scotland as a category B listing, meaning it is considered of regional importance.
