Shotts – The Giant

Background

This 8ft high sculpture is situated at the town’s Dykehead Cross, on the bend of Station Road.

Designed by Jason Paterson, this artwork depicts a foundry worker pouring molten iron into a container in one of the nearby ironworks. In a further reminder of Shotts’ industrial heritage, there is also a plaque to commemorate miners who may have worked in the many mimes that surrounded the community.

The monument is also nicknamed “The Shotts Giant,” a reference to its height but it may also be a nod to the 14th century inhabitant of the area,
Bertram De Shotts, who is believed to have been approximately seven to eight feet tall.
