YouTube Playlists Explanations

Background

SHIRE 60’s.

This is a playlist to reminisce life in Lanarkshire during the 1960’s. In Motherwell, the Colville family expanded their steel making operation and built a new works plant that later became known as Ravenscraig, which would produce more than three million tonnes of steel each year. Construction work of the M74 motorway began, with the first section between Draffan and Uddingston completed in 1969. Construction of the M8 motorway also began at Harthill in 1965. Motherwell hosted motorcycle speedway racing throughout the decade, as well as greyhound racing. It was the decade when the blast furnaces in Gartsherrie closed and the era of tram services between Glasgow and Lanarkshire’s largest towns came to an end. As another sign of the times and with the growing popularity of television, the Regal cinema and music hall in Shotts closed its doors.

SHIRE 70’s.

This is a playlist to reminisce life in Lanarkshire during the 1970’s. It was the decade when loudspeaker company Tannoy were based in Coatbridge. People danced in The Countdown club in Airdrie, whilst Tiger Tim often broadcast on Radio Clyde live from Airdrie Town Hall. People shopped for their groceries in Fine Fare, Templeton’s or William Lows supermarkets. Bellshill locals could drink and socialise in a Pub called The Iron Maiden. Ravenscraig and neighbouring steelworks employed around 15,000 people. The modernistic Civic Centre was built in Motherwell. The remains of the village of Bothwellhaugh disappeared beneath water for the creation of Strathclyde Loch in Strathclyde Park. People could also shop in the off-street Wishaw Market on Saturdays, whilst punk bands often played in the town’s Heathery Bar or Crown Hotel. Scotland’s first motorway service station was built at Harthill. The Miners Welfare club in the village of Allanton was a regular place-to-be for fans of Northern Soul throughout the decade and the high security prison HMP Shotts opened in 1978.

Lanarkshire’s music stars of the 70s included Dean Ford (the lead singer of Marmalade) and Scottish ceilidh music was kept alive by the Alexander Brothers. Brian Connolly from Hamilton and Blantyre was the lead singer The Sweet. Sally Carr, from Muirhead, had fame as lead singer of Middle Of The Road. Midge Ure also made his first appearance on Top Of The Pops as part of the group Slik.

SHIRE 80’s.

This is a playlist to reminisce life in Lanarkshire during the 1980’s. It was the decade when Coatbridge and Airdrie were in the control of Monklands District Council and you could enjoy bingo nights at the former Rialto theatre or dance at the Zanzibar. A new music scene was emerging, which became known as the Bellshill Beat and spawned many rock and indie bands who would later have chart success. Sadly, the town’s George Cinema was demolished in 1982. In 1983, Motherwell was the town chosen to host the Celtic music festival called The National Mod. The Summerlee Museum opened its gates for the first time in 1988. Magnum Sound in Wishaw was considered to be an important store for musicians who needed to buy instruments, whilst Shotts was the place-to-be for music fans who regularly went there for Soul All-Nighters.

Lanarkshire’s music stars of the 80s included Sheena Easton, Hue & Cry, The Big Dish and Alan Frew (lead singer of Canadian band Glass Tiger). East Kilbride also provided many bands including Aztec Camera and Jesus & Marychain. Midge Ure found new fame as the lead musician of Ultravox and would be the co-creator of the Top of The Pops theme. He also partnered with Bob Geldof to create Band Aid, Live Aid and what became the biggest selling single of all-time, Do They Know It’s Christmas.

SHIRE 90’s.

This is a playlist to reminisce life in Lanarkshire during the 1990’s, the decade when the very first T-In-The-Park concerts took place in Strathclyde Park. Legal and illegal raves were often held in disused buildings and industrial units throughout the county, as well as countryside barns, including a farm that is mid-way between the villages of Pettinain and Thankerton in South Lanarkshire. In Coatbridge, the Time Capsule opened its doors in 1991, with people coming from around Scotland to have “the biggest fun in a million years” according to the adverts – and a lot of people took up ice-skating as a pastime. Airdrie hosted the National Mod, a Celtic music and arts festival, which also brought street-name signs showing their Gaelic equivalent. Motherwell Football Club beat Dundee 4-3 in the final of the 1991 Scottish Cup. The end of an era came for Motherwell and Wishaw, with the closure of the steelworks at Ravenscraig in 1992 and the demolition of the towers four years later. In 1995, the Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex opened, named after the football legend who was born in Bellshill. The town also appeared on TV as the focal point for a documentary called The Sound of The Suburbs, presented by Radio 1 DJ John Peel who was especially fond of Lanarkshire’s music scene. Many people would shop for clothes at What Everyone Wants stores throughout the county and some local chip shops sold a new delicacy called The Pizza Crunch. In April of 1999, our county became the very first area to be served by one of sixty community television services that were licensed across the UK. Lanarkshire TV, whose studios were based in the building of the former Hartwood Hospital, was an experimental form of broadcasting to compliment the larger regional television channels. In November of 1999, a new local radio service launched. It was called CLAN FM (where CLAN was an acronym for County of LANarkshire) and broadcast from studios in the Newhouse industrial estate, with two FM transmitters serving Cumbernauld and the rest of North Lanarkshire, plus Hamilton.

Lanarkshire’s music stars of the 90’s included The Soup Dragons, Teenage Fanclub, The Delgados, Thrum and The River Detectives. Bellshill-born Sharleen Spitteri, lead-singer of Texas, also had a lot of hits throughout the decade. Sadly, Bellshill’s Will Sin experienced only the beginnings of chart success for The Shamen, due to his untimely death during the filming of a music video.

SHIRE 00’s.

This is a playlist to reminisce life in Lanarkshire during the 00’s. It was the decade when there was some turmoil in Scottish football, as Airdrionians FC went into liquidation, followed by the creation of Airdrie United. The Forth & Clyde Canal re-opened in 2001, with some of its water supplied by the Townhead Reservoir near Kilsyth. New Lanark, which was already a popular tourist attraction, was designated as a World Heritage Site in the same year. Lanarkshire’s local FM radio service, which launched in 1999 as CLAN FM, was bought by a radio group based in Fife and changed its name to 107 The Edge. After much brand confusion and achieving very small audiences, the station was saved from closure and became L107. In 2007, mourners came to Lanarkshire from all over the UK, for the memorial service of racing driver Colin McRae after he was killed in a helicopter crash near his home on the outskirts of Lanark. Another tragic sporting death came in the same year when Motherwell F.C.’s Phil O’Donnell suffered a heart attack during a match. L107 was saved from closure again when the radio station was bought by a new owner. The Antonine Wall, north of Kilsyth and Banton, was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2008. Whitelees Windfarm, near east Kilbride, became the largest in Europe and officially opened in 2009. In the same year, Wishaw’s John Higgins won the World Snooker Championship. The decade ended with severe and prolonged snowstorms, causing transport chaos and bringing a rare White Christmas to Lanarkshire.

SHIRE 2010’s.

This is a playlist to reminisce life in North Lanarkshire during the 2010’s. It was the decade when the prolonged snowstorms continued, causing more transport chaos. Lanarkshire’s own local radio service, which launched as CLAN FM in 1999 and was now called L107, struggled to achieve audience and financial success due to tough competition from other broadcasters and eventually closed. Another outstanding weather event visited Lanarkshire in December 2011, with the arrival of the comically nick-named “Hurricane Bawbag,” which made TV presenters in England nervous when they said it on air. Although its effects were widespread, most people stayed at home or left their workplace early, ensuring few injuries and no deaths. The day inspired folk songs and the manufacture of t-shirts that said, “I survived Hurricane Bawbag.” The start of 2012 brought more high winds, worse than Hurricane Bawbag. However, it came on a Scottish bank holiday after New Year, so there was little disruption because most people were still at home, not work. In 2014, the Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, with some sporting events taking place in Strathclyde Loch and Strathclyde Park.

Lanarkshire’s music stars of the 2010s included Shereen Cutkelvin of the group Neon Jungle.
