Shire Extra for lanarkshire Shire Extra Across Lanarkshire
This monument, depicting a Clydesdale Horse, is situated at the entrance to Lanark Auction Market, which was unveiled in 2022.
The three-metre-tall sculpture was designed and created by Dan Adams and Cod Steaks Ltd, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Clydesdale breed at Lochlyoch Farm on the outskirts of Lanark.
The Clydesdale was a unique breed created in 1720 by John Paterson and the 6th Duke of Hamilton, who were trying to have larger and stronger work horses. The first foals were a cross-breed of Flemish stallions and mares of the Clyde Valley.
Throughout the 18th century, Lanark became the epicentre for the sale of Clydesdales, which attracted large crowds during what became known as Lanark Fair. The auctions were held at the Horsemarket, which is now the car park for Morrisons supermarket. In 1867, Lanark Auction Market was founded, where sales of the Clydesdale horse attracted crowds of several thousand people and often brought the town to a standstill. The site of the market is now Braidfute Retail Park. A new auction market was constructed directly across the road from Lanark Racecourse in the 1990’s.
